Epilogue
A month had passed since Hal had introduced the worlds to one another. The village of Carter had undergone a great deal of construction work within homes in an effort to block off holes leading to the vast ocean. Nobody wanted to step into their bathroom and accidentally plunge into icy cold seawater. In some cases, rope ladders were secured and dangled through the holes so that, if anyone fell through, theyâd be able to climb back up to safety. Some residents simply relocated, but most rearranged their compromised space by moving walls and creating new door openings.
Some villagers actually liked the holes. Where else could one go deep-sea fishing without even leaving the house? Families stocked up on heavy duty fishing rods, bait and tackle, and it became routine to catch five-pound haddock while seated just inside the doorway to the bathroom.
It was said that the trolls in the east enjoyed the fish, too. The mines at Bad Rock Gulch were now one gigantic pulsing hole in the ground. The hills had collapsed and fallen into the ocean in the other world, and the sea there kept surging high and pouring through, then ebbing, leaving behind flopping fish and occasional sharks. The trolls were happy to clean up. Since the goblins had no reason to use Eastward Pass anymore, this new fish diet more than made up for all the chickens the trolls were losing out on.
To the west and north of the village, more pulsing holes opened onto land, and through these holes came âvisitors.â With the spores finally eradicated, these visitors had emerged from underground bunkers and hermetically sealed camps. Some were happy to return to their old homes and wait for power and utilities to be restored. Others had nothing to go back to and stepped through the holes to start a new life in a fantastic new world.
Scrags were chased down, gangs disbanded, and the most violent of them imprisoned. The rest were organized into groups run by soldiers. It was a struggle, but they grudgingly started to âget with the programâ as Briskle called it, and a painfully slow clean-up operation commenced on the streets of the city and nearby suburbs. Though they didnât need accommodation, the scrags accepted food and a number of rudimentary salves for their burning, itchy skin while Darcy worked with the dryads to come up with something better.
These were early days yet, too early to tell how things would work out. At the moment, everyone was behaving. Hal thought it was like a bunch of dogs being herded into a cage together; they were sniffing around, eyeing one another, some of them suspicious and hostile, with others tentatively wagging their tails and offering friendship. Nobody quite knew whether a fight would break out, who would be mauled, and who would establish themselves as top dogs.
The complete loss of geo-rocks proved to be a problem until the military started supplying generators and running power cables through pulsing holes. Once some
